Floral Hubris

“Today, 26th of may of the year 2270, a local botanic team made a strange discovery. As they were studying the mating dances of the tropical paradise birds in Italy, at the very edges of the day, they came across a flower that got them intrigued.
Their thick hairy petals were dressed with a striking ruby red, proudly chasing for the very last drops of sunlight travelling through the canopy. It’s numerous tiny pointy leaves, increasing the surface of exchanges with their environment, were the epitome of adaptation to this increasingly moist habitat. Mesmerized, one of them returned to his role of scientist, and cautiously grabbed his scalpel to cut the flower from the base. Imagine his surprise when, the second he passed under the stem, an atrocious smell of decaying body, rotting matter rose. Two gestures came along, one step back, and the florescence flew back to the soil, where it belongs.
Automatic chemical response of encapsulated death dreams, at least one flower humans may not pick again.
Symbolism of where hubris stops
.”

This short fiction was an attempt of imagining what could be a flower in the future, a speculation about its narrative and features. Studies predict that because of global warming, plants phenotypes will be increasingly forced to adapt at a tremendous pace. It could lead them to promote thicker petals, numerous and smaller leaves to expand the surfaces of exchange, and develop defense mecanisms against their new predators.
